On Friday 15 March during the Women’s Networking Lunch at APP2024, Hon Shannon Fentiman MP, Minister for Health, Mental Health and Ambulance Services and Minister for Women, announced a new Pilot in Queensland, which will allow appropriately trained community pharmacists to prescribe hormonal contraception to women and girls aged over 16 years.
The Pilot will help address significant barriers in accessing hormonal contraception and is expected to be available by early July 2024.
As a leading education and training provider for the pharmacy industry, the Australasian College of Pharmacy welcomes this announcement and is proud to support this initiative for both women and community pharmacists in Queensland.
Accredited training developed by the College will be available soon for Queensland community pharmacists. This training will enable Queensland community pharmacists to provide this much-needed healthcare service to women and ensure the Pilot is a success.
Queensland community pharmacists interested in undertaking the training are encouraged to complete the expression of interest form available on the College website.
