College launches new CPD for pharmacists practising to expanded scope

The Australasian College of Pharmacy (College) is excited to launch the Supplementary Scope Series, offering exceptional continuing professional development opportunities for pharmacists practising to expanded scope.

College CEO, Amanda Seeto, has recognised the need for the College’s education offering to pivot and provide robust continuing professional development for pharmacists engaging in prescribing activities, as scope of practice continues to expand across Australia.

“Pharmacists must undertake continuing professional development in line with their individual scope of practice,” Ms Seeto said.

“With permanent scope of practice changes now in place Australia-wide, pharmacists need to undertake CPD activities that support their practice.

“The College has been working hard to develop the Supplementary Scope Series which is CPD specifically for pharmacists practising with an expanded scope.

“We want to be clear that this Series is not just for pharmacists in Queensland who are further down the full scope journey, but any pharmacist in Australia who has started to expand their scope of practice,” Ms Seeto said,

College Chief Pharmacist, Suzanna Nash, has sought feedback from State governments and pilot participants to determine key topics to supplement and support pharmacists’ clinical knowledge and expanded scope of practice.

“The first topic of our Supplementary Scope Series will focus on the importance of maintaining accurate and complete clinical notes and documentation following consultations with patients, and the medico-legal considerations for pharmacists” Ms Nash said.

“The College’s Series is different from standard CPD. The November learning activities include on online learning course and the opportunity to attend an interactive online workshop scheduled for 6.30pm AEST on Thursday 28 November 2024.”

“The workshop will feature small breakout groups that foster peer-to-peer learning and facilitate case-based discussions using real world scenarios. Workshop numbers will be capped to ensure a quality learning experience.”

“Most importantly, our Series will be led by presenters and facilitators who are pharmacists practising to their full scope and colleagues from the medical profession.”

“This is the new way forward for pharmacists’ continuing professional development. Keep an eye out for our 2025 calendar of events,” Ms Nash concluded.
